European Championships update
Sunday 11 September 2005
The championship game will be between Russia and the Czech Republic (like in 2003). Russia beat Lithuania in the semi-finals 65-50, while the Czech Republic beat Spain in the other semi, 76-66. Spain has to be disappointed after a good showing in the group stage (including a win over Russia).
With regards to World Championships qualification, the top 5 teams will qualify. This means that Russia, the Czech Republic, Spain and Lithuania have already qualified. The fifth spot will be either France or Latvia, after winning their respective classification games today (France over Poland 73-71, Latvia over hosts Turkey 81-78). France should go in as favourites after beating Latvia by 19 in the group stage.
Players to watch out for in the future? 6'4" Russian post Tatiana Shchegoleva and 5'10" Latvian sharp shooter Anete Jekabsone.
