CARRIE GRAF WAS NOT SACKED FROM THE MERCURY

Tuesday 06 September 2005

For the last time, CARRIE GRAF WAS NOT SACKED FROM THE MERCURY. Culprits are here and here.

Evidence?

Quote from article 1:

Sulka also doesn't foresee any coaching changes. "I expect Carrie to be back," he said.

Quote from article 2:

The Mercury and Graf decided to go separate ways Thursday night, said General Manager Seth Sulka, who just six days ago had said he expected her back.
"It's a little surprising, but at the end of the day, it was pretty much her decision," Sulka said Friday.

Also, the Mercury Brigade have repeatedly confirmed that Graf was not sacked. So can we drop it, please?

As to why she left, I suspect she wants to make a run at the Opals head coaching job. The only thing that stopped her from getting the gig in 2004 was her WNBA commitments (BA wanted her to commit full time and she couldn't).

I hope you are correct that Graf was not fired. It would be a shame for Phoenix to let go of such a quality coach. Their elimination from the playoffs this year was more likely due to the absence of Maria Stepanova at the start and finish of the season than to any misteps made by the coaching staff. It would too much like their finicky NBA brethren to let go of a quality coach merely to "get to the next level" as managing partner Robert sarver was quoted in the press release on the Mercury website. I hope that they replace her with a QUALIFIED candidate rather than follow the questionable path being blazed by ownership in LA and Charlotte.
