Analysis of Nancy Lieberman's 2005 WNBA draft rumours article
Tuesday 12 April 2005
NL has posted an article of draft rumours and it is an interesting little piece. I'll give NL credit for posting something worthwhile for once. I shall take a look at the various snippets of info contained within (warning: some slight Mercury fanboyism contained within).
Tan White to go #1?
Click here (or scroll up) for my Sting analysis but the gist of it is - I think it's a solid idea.
Indiana really wanted Tan White and offered Nat Williams at the #2 to Charlotte for the #1
Ok Indy - WTF? Tan's a good talent, but she's not that good. Ebony Hoffman and Kelly Schumacher patrolling the paint? Poor Catch will have a bigger workload than before.
Wecker and Pierson for Melvin and a future draft pick
I think this is a bad, bad, bad idea (as a Mercury fan!). Chas is a solid post but she doesn't particularly excel in areas that the Mercury needs - defence and rebounding. Sandora Irvin is #1 cheaper and #2 probably better in these areas than Chas. Washington must be hoping it goes through - Wecker would solve their need for a wing and three point shooting.
Sancho Lyttle had a great combine
I admittedly don't know much about Lyttle but she sounds like a really raw, Yo Griffith-type (not sure whether she'd ever reach Yo's calibre though). Could teams take a flyer on her? She could be the best player to come out of this draft if developed well (OTOH the WNBA isn't exactly a great developmental league either).
Dydek to CT for the #8
I think this would help both teams. Yes, Dydek should do better but she'd perform the role CT needs her to do to - fill the paint, rebound, block shots and hit the occasional jumper. Good for SASS as they go into full rebuilding mode as it frees up salary and they could get a decent youngster at #8.
Minny interested in Ely
Hopefully they take her - if only to remove the temptation for Anne.
Seattle's pick
Feenstra? Wha? Lindsay Taylor redux anybody? Haynie isn't a bad idea but as I said in my Storm analysis earlier on in the week, Anne *should* go for a defensive stopper like Tanisha Wright or even take a "gamble" on Chelsea Newton. Roneeka Hodges is a thought but Seattle have loaded up on offensive minded bench players (Castro Marques, Vodapyanova, Bibby) - it's time for some D.
The Mystics want Anna
Give us Milton-Jones then! Chas for Anna? Give me a break.
My final mock draft will come later on in the week.
